If you live on the East Coast, chances are you’ve seen your fair share of winter weather this year. New York City and Boston have been hammered by multiple winter storms, and the Washington, D.C. area, which missed out on several of these storms, got a taste of winter wrath with a thundersnow last week. Ice and snow continue to blanket the area, with a very large storm hitting the Midwest and Northeast over the past day.
Doing Good throughout the winter time is an imperative we can’t stress enough. In addition to days off from school and winter wonderlands, these storms often spell trouble for our most vulnerable citizens. Power outages leave children and the elderly without heat, warm water, or electricity, which affects several life-saving devices. There are people in the DMV area alone that went several days without power after last Wednesday’s storm, and people of all ages have no protection from the elements if they’re one of the hundreds of thousands of people in the U.S. without homes or shelter.
We have an obligation to consider those who could use a helping hand. Remember to set aside time and money to help all people stay warm and safe. Consider donating flashlights, generators, non-perishable foods, and other items that are useful during power outages to neighbors in need. Winter items such as coats, hats, gloves, and thermoses can also be donated to your local shelter. Additionally, if you have friends or relatives who lose power, lend a hand – offer to share supplies such as batteries or an extra flashlight. Toughing out winter storms is easier when done collaboratively.
We hope that all of you stay warm and safe this winter!
