The Good That Keeps On Giving

It’s the holiday season, and everywhere we turn, we see examples of people giving. The spirit of the season inspires many to take on philanthropic efforts, and heartwarming stories of charity, community, and love abound in the news and in our daily conversations. Seeing the abundance of good that occurs each December does not leave us content, though; but rather hoping to see such continued philanthropy throughout the entire year.

Think of the joy you feel when reading stories about successful toy drives, communities helping individuals keep their homes, and a charity helping a wounded veteran go home for the holidays. Seeing the good that others are capable of makes us think, “I’m not only blessed by this news, but inspired by it.” Even if we are not conscious of it, our own philanthropic efforts are often fueled by the examples set by charitable others. As such, we should return the favor by being examples of philanthropy ourselves.

Setting such an example is at its best when we do so all year long, not simply over the holidays and certainly not just because we see others doing so. Ultimately, we must strive to be an example as opposed to following one, especially when it comes to doing good and helping others. It is our Christmas wish to see everyone doing good for one another each and every day.

Remember, doing good is contagious! Think of the inspiration you feel when you see people helping their communities, and consider passing along that inspiration by doing good yourself. It’s a wonderful gift that keeps on giving year after year.
