Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and stores are filled to the brim with flowers, candy, teddy bears, and other items meant to show our sweethearts that we care. The holiday is often associated with romantic couples, and when we think of showing our love on Valentine’s Day, we think of what we can do for our significant others.
Love, however, does not just pertain to the way we feel about someone we’re in a relationship with. It also pertains to feelings such as compassion, empathy, and philanthropy. By focusing strictly on one manifestation of love, Valentine’s Day is actually quite limiting in terms of how we celebrate it. What if, in addition to highlighting romantic love, we also used the day to highlight compassion for others?
Consider celebrating Valentine’s Day by showing the love you have in all of its forms. In addition to showing a significant other that you care, show your compassion by helping people in need. Volunteering or taking part in community projects not only shows your compassion for others, but allows you to celebrate the holiday with an entire community. Chocolates and flowers are temporary, but gifts such as clean water or medical assistance make a lasting difference. Check out our Doing Good virtual store to find gifts that show your compassion for people in need. You may not ever know the people you help, but by showing compassion on Valentine’s Day, you are making the holiday as special for them as you would for a significant other.
Remember to celebrate the people you love all year long. We wish everyone a Happy Valentine’s Day!
