Doing Good and Going Viral

ted williams

Usually when we think of YouTube, we think of videos featuring cats taking a nap or TV personalities making mistakes on-air. But the site also has inspiring videos in its ranks, ones that can lead to even more inspiring stories and actions.

Take, for instance, the story of Ted Williams. Williams had fallen on hard times after facing problems with drugs and alcohol. He was homeless and living on the street when he was featured in a video showcasing his “golden voice.” The video became a viral sensation overnight, and Williams received job offers and support from all around the country. In addition to employment and newfound stardom, Williams was also reunited with his 90-year-old mother, who lives in New York City.

Thanks to a video shared on a social media site, Williams was offered a second chance at life and given an opportunity he otherwise may not have found. Stories such as these serve as wonderful reminders of the power technology can have on changing people’s lives for the better. As we see the online presence of philanthropy grow through websites, charity exchanges, and videos motivating the nation to help individuals, we grow very excited at what social media can do for social good.

We are very happy for Ted Williams and wish him the best of luck. Hopefully others who are in similar situations will get the second chance they deserve.
