Doing Good and Celebrating Women

Today is International Women’s Day, a day where we celebrate the work and accomplishments of women around the world. The Doing Good Campaign shares stories about women helping and making a difference throughout the whole year; and on this day, we wish to celebrate some of the many women who have made a difference in others’ lives.

One such woman is Bridget Baker McGee. Around three years ago, Baker McGee’s cousin was diagnosed with breast cancer. Determined to make a difference for both her cousin and for breast cancer patients everywhere, Baker McGee began actively fundraising for research by networking, using social media, and becoming a volunteer for Susan G. Komen Foundation’s Race for the Cure. Baker McGee loves doing whatever she can to make a difference, stating, “This summer celebrates my cousin’s third year fighting cancer, and her daughter’s third birthday … whether I raise $100 or $500 or more, I feel like I am doing something good and I will continue doing it for them.”

Another woman helping those in her community is Felicia Willett, who uses her restaurant to help ill children in her community. Wanting to give back to her community, Willett frequently hosts Wish Parties, where children suffering from cancer or other serious illness can make cupcakes, cook dinner, and spend quality time with people who care about them. Willett recalls one of her “Wish Kids,” Caroline, who unfortunately passed away in July 2009. The night before she died, Caroline cited the wish parties as one of her fondest memories. Says Willett, “I didn't feel like I'd done that much to impact a little girl's life.  But, that of all the people that she could remember the night before she died, I was one of them – I just had not experienced anything like that before."

Women everywhere who are Doing Good and making a difference deserve to be celebrated year-round, as well as followed by their examples! Start today by giving a gift of medicine, food, and/or shelter to someone in need. You can also honor a special woman in your life by making a donation in her name! Together we can all do good and celebrate women’s accomplishments year-round!
