Announcing The 2011 Doing Good Scholarship Program Winners

 

After a very careful and extensive application process, the Stafford Foundation is proud to announce the winners of the first annual Doing Good™ Campaign scholarship program, awarding three individual scholarships totaling $40,000 for the 2011-2012 academic year.

The program seeks to reward deserving individuals who want to use their education to make an impact in the lives of the underserved. The scholarship program is divided into awards of $25,000; $10,000; and $5,000 for three recipients to use towards their college or graduate education.

Meet Our Winners

Justine E. Amos, $25,000 Scholarship Winner
24-year-old Justine, from Topeka, KS, is the proud winner of Doing Good’s biggest scholarship this year. She currently attends American University where she is pursuing a master’s degree in International Affairs/Relations. Her service to our world community consists of a significant amount of time in Africa, where she served as an Intern and Nursery Assistant at Mama Ngina Kenyatta Children's Home in Nairobi, Kenya; an Undergraduate Student Leader in the Alternative Break program in Lusaka, Zambia; and a volunteer in the U.S. Peace Corps in Swaziland. Her domestic service include internships at A Wider Circle in Bethesda, MD and the National Council for Adoption in Alexandria, VA, and she has served as a volunteer in the St. Bernard Project in New Orleans, LA. Speaking of her volunteer work on HIV & AIDS prevention in Swaziland, Justine says, “I volunteer because I believe that every individual deserves to have healthy food, a quality education, and access to health care—things that have always been guaranteed to me.” Justine will use her Doing Good Scholarship to pursue a Master’s in Public Health at Tulane University.

Shannon R. Esswein, $10,000 Scholarship Winner
Shannon, a 17-year-old senior at Simi Valley High in California takes our second highest Doing Good Scholarship. Her tireless devotion to community service and healthcare is evident in the array of work she’s done in her community, which include but are not limited to: Care Packs for Kids an organization she founded and organized filling backpacks for foster children; Pet Stop Rescue where she helped rescue animals and assist with pet adoptions; being a counselor at the American Association of University Women Tech Trek Math and Science Camp for Girls; and organizing gifts for needy families through the Giving Tree Program. Shannon hopes to become a doctor one day, researching cures for diseases and making beneficial medical advancements. “Just as people have inspired and helped me my entire life, I hope that I can change other people’s lives as well,” she says. Shannon’s Doing Good Scholarship will help her complete her Bachelor’s Degree in Physiological Sciences at the University of Los Angeles California.

Austin W. Davis, $5,000 Scholarship Winner
Austin, 17, hails from Bellevieew, WA, where he will soon graduate from Newport Senior High School. His commitment to service has included being a co-founder and VP of the Washington Student Math Association, a fundraiser and participant in World Vision’s 2005 30 Hour Famine campaign, and planning and hosting contests for the Knights of Pi Math Tournament. He also held a software development internship at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, where he said he was “struck by how my relatively small contribution as a software developer could potentially have such a profound impact on the world.” Austin will use his Doing Good Scholarship to pursue a degree in computer science and engineering.

The Doing Good™ Campaign Scholarship program will be held annually, with next year’s program beginning in Fall 2011. The program is open to students with a high school education or higher; and who are citizens, national or legal permanent residents of the United States. Applicants must have attained a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or above, or have earned a General Educational Diploma (GED). Applicants must also be active in their community and making a positive impact in the lives of others.
